Moving to Dubai: Complete Relocation Checklist for 2026
Moving to Dubai is an exciting step, but the logistics can feel overwhelming. Between visa paperwork, apartment hunting, school enrollment, and setting up utilities, there's a lot to manage.
I moved here in 2023 with two suitcases and a lot of anxiety. Looking back, I wish I'd had a proper checklist. So I've created one — organized by timeline, from "before you board the plane" to "fully settled in Dubai."
T-Minus 3 Months: Pre-Move Planning
Visa & Paperwork
- [ ] Confirm visa type — Employment visa (sponsored by employer), freelance visa (free zone), Golden Visa (investor/talent), or remote work visa
- [ ] Collect documents for attestation — Degree certificates, marriage/birth certificates, work experience letters
- [ ] Start document attestation process — This takes 4–6 weeks:
- Step 1: Home country Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Step 2: UAE embassy in your home country
- Step 3: UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (after arrival)
- [ ] Request police clearance certificate — From your home country (valid for 3 months)
- [ ] Check passport validity — Needs 6+ months remaining
Financial Preparations
- [ ] Open an international bank account — Emirates NBD Non-Resident account, ADCB Non-Resident, or HSBC Premier
- [ ] Get a travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees
- [ ] Build 3–6 months of emergency savings in accessible accounts
- [ ] Research UAE banks for after arrival (see our comparison guide)
- [ ] Exchange some currency to AED for immediate expenses (recommended: AED 5,000–10,000 cash)
Housing Research
- [ ] Research neighborhoods based on budget and commute
- Budget singles: Barsha Heights, Silicon Oasis, JVC
- Couples: JLT, Marina, Business Bay
- Families: Arabian Ranches, Mirdif, The Springs, Al Furjan
- [ ] Set up property viewings with agents (2–3 weeks before arrival)

- Rent: 1–4 cheques per year (quarterly/annually)
- Security deposit: 5% of annual rent
- Agency commission: 5% of annual rent (standard)
