3 Mistakes Newcomers Make During Their First Dubai Summer

Moving to Dubai in the middle of summer is a unique experience. Despite all the warnings, most newcomers end up making the same mistakes. Here are three of the most common ones I have observed over the years.

1. Running the AC at Full Power 24/7

The instinct is understandable. The moment you step outside, the heat hits you like a wall. So you set the thermostat to 18°C and leave it running all day and night. The result? Your first DEWA bill arrives at 1,500 AED or more.

The reality is that Dubai apartments are well insulated. Once the room cools down, it stays cool for a long time. Setting the AC to 24-26°C and using the timer function during the day can cut your bill by 40-50%. The difference in comfort is minimal.

2. Underestimating Walking Distance in Summer

Google Maps says 500 meters — that is a 6-minute walk, right? Wrong. In July, walking 500 meters under direct sunlight at 2 PM feels like 30 minutes. Your shirt will be soaked before you reach the next building.

The rule of thumb in Dubai summer: if it is more than 100 meters, do not walk. Use the car, the Metro, or find a connected indoor pathway. Many buildings in Dubai Marina and Downtown are connected via air-conditioned pedestrian bridges.

3. Working from Outdoor Café Terraces

The pictures look great. A trendy café with a fan, a misting system, and a view. But between 11 AM and 5 PM in July, those terraces are unusable. The mist evaporates instantly, the fan blows hot air, and your laptop will overheat.

Always check whether the café has a fully enclosed, air-conditioned indoor section before you go. If the menu says "indoor and outdoor seating," call ahead and ask whether the indoor section has actual AC, not just a fan.

Avoid these three mistakes, and your first Dubai summer will be a lot more manageable.
