Dubai Public Transport: Complete Guide (2026)

Dubai Public Transport: Complete Guide (2026)

Dubai's public transport system has been voted among the best in the Middle East. After four years of relying on it daily β€” from the metro to the tram to the abra β€” here's everything you need to know in 2026.

The Nol Card System

Your key to all public transport in Dubai. One card works across metro, bus, tram, water bus, and even some taxis.

Card Types

Card Type Best For Cost
Red Ticket Tourists, occasional users AED 2 (paper, single trips only)
Silver Nol Regular commuters AED 25 (includes AED 19 balance)
Gold Nol Gold Class metro cabin AED 25 (includes AED 19 balance)
Blue Nol Students & seniors AED 25 (50% discount on fares)

Where to buy: Any metro station ticket office, RTA-approved stores, or vending machines.

Fares (2026)

Standard class:

Journey Type Within 1 zone 2 zones 3+ zones
Metro/Tram AED 3 AED 5 AED 7.50
Bus AED 3 AED 5 AED 7.50
Metro + Bus combo AED 3 AED 5 AED 7.50
Water Bus (abra) AED 2 AED 4 AED 5

Gold Class (metro cabin): 2x the standard fare

Students & Seniors (Blue Nol): 50% of standard fare

Children under 5: Free

Note: Fares increased slightly in early 2025. The prices above reflect current RTA rates. Always tap your Nol card at both entry and exit β€” forgetting to tap out results in a maximum fare charge (AED 7.50).

Dubai Metro

  • Frequency: Every 8–12 minutes

Important: The tram has priority at junctions β€” cars must stop for it. And yes, there's a Gold Class cabin with leather seats and wider views.

RTA App

The RTA app (available on iOS/Android) is your best tool:
- Plan multi-mode journeys (metro β†’ bus β†’ walking)
- Check real-time metro/bus schedules
- Top up your Nol card
- Book taxis
- Pay parking fees (via RTA Smart Parking)

Pro Tips

  1. Avoid peak hours (7:30–9 AM, 5–7 PM) β€” metro is very crowded between Business Bay and Mall of the Emirates
  2. Gold Class is worth it during peak hours β€” AED 7.50–15 per trip for wider seats and less crowding
  3. Get the Nol card as soon as you arrive β€” it's the only way to use public transport
  4. Use metro + taxi combo β€” some areas (JVC, Motor City, Sports City) are not metro-connected
  5. Download offline maps β€” phone signal can be patchy underground in some metro sections
  6. Park & Ride β€” free parking at 12 metro stations if you use public transport for the rest of your journey
  7. Women & Children cabin β€” available on every metro train, usually less crowded
